Brazilian Panel on Climate Change launched

Initiative inspired in the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

The Brazilian Minister of Environment, Carlos Minc, and the Minister of Science and Technology, Sérgio Rezende, launched on  Friday, April 17, at the Botanical Gardens in Rio, at 4PM, the Brazil Panel on Climate Change (PBMC).

The initiative, inspired in the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, will have until 2012 to produce a report with a complete upgrade of the technical and scientific bases on  the situation of Brazil towards climate change, as well as its risks, effects and impacts on Brazil’s development.

Researchers from Brazilian public and private institutions will be encouraged to organize and expand the scientific production about the impacts of climate change on the national territory.  The data currently being used, in Minc’s opinion, may lead to errors in the implementation of public policies, as they are outdated.  Scholars from around the world are constantly warning about the worsening of climate change and its increased impact on tropical countries.

In addition to analyzing scientific, technical and socio-economic research on climate change in all of its aspects, the Panel will have the task of making this knowledge available, in the form of reports, to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and governments as well as to all institutions and individuals interested in the subject.
